Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

Objective

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is aimed at removing bags under the eyes or to rejuvenate the upper eyelids when excess skin is present. This procedure will restore to your eyes an appearance of freshness and youth. It will remove your tired expression while brightening your eyes. The causes are either genetic, or the effects of aging.

The upper and lower lids can be operated separately or at the same time.

The Procedure

The procedure is generally done under local anesthetic, with or without intravenous sedation. Its duration varies between one and two hours. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed through incisions in the creases above the eyelids.Excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle is removed, creating a "cleaner" looking upper eyelid and a more youthful look. The lower eyelid incisions are made just below the eyelashes, excess skin is trimmed, and both skin and muscle tightened. Excess fat is commonly removed. Ultimately, a blepharoplasty will make your eyes look refreshed, giving you a more rested appearance.

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss with you all aspects related to this type of procedure, its benefits as well as the risks that may be involved.
